The Right Ring Binder for You
We talk a lot about custom ring binders, and that’s because it’s what we do. It’s not one-size-fits-all when it comes to ring binders.
It used to be easy when deciding what type of binder was needed–Vinyl Ring Binders reigned supreme and options were limited. Over time various types of binders have become more prevalent and now there are many choices when deciding which ring binder is best for you—Turned Edge, Vinyl, Poly, Aluminum, Leather, Cloth and many more cover materials. This article will discuss the 3 most popular types— Turned Edge, Vinyl and Poly–and offer a brief summary of their advantages to help you make an informed decision. Should you require more assistance our trained binder experts are ready to help with your project.
Turned Edge Binders (also called Casebound Binders) are a very popular choice due to the ability to offer a variety of dynamic printing and materials. High quality 4-color process imprinting really allows your branding message to pop, while book cloth linen or leatherette materials offer a timeless and classy image.
Turned Edge binders are very durable and cost effective at both low quantities (using digital printing) or higher quantities (using offset printing). They are constructed by gluing and wrapping the cover material around chipboard, with the lining material following the same process, much like a hard cover book. Rings are then riveted into place to finish off the binder and other accessories added, such as Pockets, Index Tabs, Business Card Holder, and more.
These binders also have environmentally friendly advantages in that the paper used for printing is mostly ESF certified, recycled and recyclable. The chipboard used to provide structure is 90-100% post-consumer recycled and the rings are recyclable as well.
Vinyl Binders offer many advantages including durability, economical price point, a very large imprint area and a wide selection of materials. Choose from basic vinyl up to the high perceived value of premium simulated leather and much more in between.
The most popular type of binder has Heat Sealed construction (sealing is the welding together of materials through heat) that allows for a quick and efficient manufacturing process. Add-ons such as pockets and business card holders are easy and inexpensive, and Index Tabs are always a smart choice. Binders made using premium simulated leather, combined with decorative stitching and padding, offer an appearance with a very high perceived value and work well in the Finance, Insurance, Law, and any other industry where a subtle and classic image is desired. Another popular type of vinyl binder construction is Turned & Sewn where the material is turned around the edges and sewn into place. This process is more expensive and adds an even more lofty upscale appearance.
Vinyl Binders can be imprinted using many methods, including Screen Printing in one or multiple colors, Foil Stamping, Debossing, Stamp Debossing, and 4 color process printing. Today Vinyl Binders use vinyl made from recycled materials and is also recyclable, and the chipboard is 90-100% post-consumer recycled material.
Poly Binders are usually the least expensive and most durable, making them a great choice for lower budgets and/or for binders that will receive heavy use. Poly is considered a more environmentally friendly material because the extruding process is clean and the material is easily recycled. Poly Binders are easy to keep clean as well by simply wiping with a damp cloth, another advantage for a high use application. The Polypropylene or Polyethylene material used to make the binders come in a multitude of colors and thicknesses, the most popular being .23 gauge (very flexible), .35 gauge and .55 gauge (still flexible but thicker and stiffer). Pockets can be added through either a welding process or with adhesive backing.
Poly Binders are most often screen printed in one or multiple colors and take an imprint very well. Screen Printing allows for imprints on front and back covers as well as the spine at no extra charge.
Index Tabs and Fulfillment are also offered by Forbes and highly encouraged. Index Tabs are a natural addition to any binder and we offer fulfillment services that include shrink wrapping, drop shipping, and even make-and-holds.
